TAP Innovation in Technology Award

As part of our on-going effort to ignite the enthusiasm and creativity in our community the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Columbus Technology in Architectural Practice Knowledge Committee is seeking outstanding examples of how unique applications of technology have been used to improve design, increase efficiency, improve collaboration or other direct benefit to the design/construction process.

Submission Criteria

  • Efforts by any individual, any single team within a project, and entire project delivery team, an owner or an organization;
  • Effective and extensive collaboration between project stakeholders;
  • Recognizable, positive process changes that enhance project objectives;
  • Recognizable, positive culutral changes that affect project objectives;
  • Clearly-stated and thorough documentation of implementations and resulting benefits from application of innovative technologies and/or progressive methodologies, such as process maps, costs, schedules, quality assessments, asset valuation or facility operations. Data of a sensitive nature (e.g. specific dollar amounts) may be omitted, but some type of reliable metrics should be used to indicate quantifiable benefits;
  • Clear depiction of using data interoperability to gain project design and/or delivery benefits. Opportunities where open standards were used to achieve data interoperability across multiple techonology platforms are HIGHLY encouraged.
  • Enhancement and enabling of resiliency and sustainable design goals as well as other strategic initiatives outlined in AIA 2016-2020 Strategic Plan.

Recognition

All winning submissions will be posted to the AIA Columbus website to enable our community to appreciate this great work. Winner(s) will be recognized with the award of a commemorative plaque during the AIA Columbus Architecture Awards Ceremony on November 8, 2018, and will be recognized as the ‘2018 AIA Columbus TAP Innovator of the Year’, along with recognition on both the local AIA Columbus website and in an official press release. Submissions will also be added to the 2018 Architecture Awards booklet given out at the night of the ceremony.

Timothy Hawk, FAIA, Elected to AIA National Board

Timothy Hawk, FAIA, has been elected by the AIA National Strategic Council to be part of the AIA National Board as an At-large Director. He will serve on the board 2019-2021.

Hawk is the President of WSA Studio in Columbus, Ohio. An AIA Ohio Gold Medal firm, WSA Studio seeks to create innovative spaces through design collaboration. The firm’s work features urban interventions, significant interior environments, and iconic built form.

Hawk attended The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, earning both his Bachelor of Science in Architecture and Master of Architecture. While at Ohio State, he began his twenty-nine-year leadership role in the education of architecture students. He has taught at the University of Illinois at Chicago, The Ohio State University and is currently an adjunct professor of architecture at Columbus State.

Hawk’s design portfolio includes corporate and institutional facilities for The McGraw-Hill Companies, L Brands, Motorists Insurance, Grange Insurance, Ohio Mutual Insurance, State Auto Insurance, The Ohio State University, and Ohio University. He has also been a tireless advocate for the renovation and adaptation of historic structures throughout Ohio.

Hawk has been an active AIA leader on the local and national level. He was President of AIA Columbus (2009-2010), the Chair of the AIA National Advisory Group on Interior Architecture (2006-2009), and the AIA Columbus Honor Awards Committee Chair (2002-2005). As a community leader, Hawk has served as the President of the OSU Knowlton School of Architecture Alumni Society (2010-2011), the founding member of the Columbus Center for Architecture and Design, and Foundation Board Member (2010-2011). Currently, Hawk is the senior regional representative to the AIA Strategic Council
