2009: Diversity of Practice

For the 2009 AIA Columbus year, we have selected to utilize our monthly meetings to focus on the diverse and expanding role of the architect.  Believe it or not, most graduates from architecture programs of study are not practicing in the traditional manner. Really.  Think about it.  We represent owner’s interests, we design products, we take on project management roles, we build and construct, we consult regarding sustainability, we teach, we develop, and we design.  The profession is diverse.  And our culture demands that we stand up and embrace the evolving role of the architect.  We are many things, let’s celebrate it.

So, as a means to expose this DIVERSITY OF PRACTICE, AIA Columbus is introducing the BIG_small program.  We anticipate three distinct BIG:small presentations, with the first session featured at the January meeting.  NBBJ (big); DesignGroup (medium); Jonathan Barnes Architecture & Design (small) were selected from a number of quality submittals.  Each firm will be given twenty to thirty minutes to present and share directions that the firms are taking in their continued efforts to maintain quality, lead design, and forward the profession.  Follow up BIG_small programs will occur in March and July. Click here for the first BIG_small.

Structure is good.  It holds up our buildings.  It provides a permanent foundation upon which we evolve and grow.  And, throughout 2009, we will work to bring structure to our programming.  Chapter meetings will be offered each month on the third Wednesday.  Continuing Education programs will commence at 4, with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres from 5:30 to 6, and programming offered from 6 through 7:30.  Of course there will be programs that are offered beyond our chapter meetings, but the monthly meetings provide the best opportunity for our chapter to come together as one strong organization.  Please see the chapter meeting overview and mark your calendars now.....we look forward to continuing the dialogue about architecture with each of you.
