COTE - Fenestration

Building Enclosure Fenesetration Symposium

Friday, December 9, 2016

We are excited to welcome Karol Kazmierczak back to Columbus to once again share his extensive experience and engaging personality with us.  Those who took part in the AIA+2030 series will remember his unique presentation style and deep insights and have requested that we bring him back to share more.  Kaz has returned with a focused session covering building enclosures and fenestration design.   Through evaluations of details and case studies this seminar will focus on being able to categorize fundamental safety considerations, identify factors leading to condensation, and identify structural aspects for use in developing designs and details for fenestration. Methods to achieve desired project design or programmatic goals via product selection and properly specifying application of products will be a major topic. The seminar will identify and review key components in curtain wall systems and storefront systems, types of operable windows, and limitation of doors for use in mitigating water, air, and sound infiltration/exfiltration. The session will conclude with a series of case studies identifying factors leading to issues such as glass blemishes, glass breakage, skylight collapse, and curtain wall collapse.  This final hour which is available separately from the remainder of the seminar, will review how these deficiencies can be averted in future projects.

Speaker: Karol Kazmierczak, CDT, LEED-AP, NCARB

Karol Kazmierczak (Kaz) is a senior building science architect with 20 years of façade engineering experience diversified among building enclosure technical design, consulting, construction inspections, diagnostic testing, and field investigations. Kaz bridges the traditional gaps among the mechanical, structural, and architectural disciplines, and between the design and construction due to his specialized European façade engineering experience, architectural education, and a strong field presence. He no longer practices facade engineering; instead he practices MacGyver engineering by developing custom procedures and tools to diagnose failures of existing buildings. Kaz is a registered architect in New York and Florida, carries CDT and LEED-AP certificates, speaks publicly, and writes articles on subject of building enclosures. Kaz is an internationally renowned architectural glazing expert. You can see him sometimes as he wades through piles of broken glass in order to find out who broke it and how. He is also called as an expert witness in forensic disputes.
