Denison University's Ebaugh Lab Renovation: April 8, 2011

Ebaugh Labs was built in 1965 to house the university’s chemistry department and program.  It has served its purpose well but wear and tear and pedagogical changes require the complete renovation of the building.  The three story brick shell of the existing main building will remain and the interior will be completely gutted and renovated.  The floors and some walls will remain and all new mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems will be installed.

The existing above ground single story structure connecting Ebaugh Labs to Herrick Auditorium, the round auditorium space to the east of the main building, will be removed.  A new three story brick clad structure will be added to the east of the existing building.  Herrick Auditorium and Ebaugh will remain connected to Ebaugh underground and there will be a small brick rest room addition added to the south east of Herrick.

A smaller single story brick clad addition and three story elevator/stair tower will also be added to the west and north of the existing building.

Windows will be replaced in the existing building, a new central stair tower with roof skylights will be added in the interior core of the existing building.  Limited landscaping will be provided with walks and seating areas provided for pedestrian circulation.  Fire lane access will be maintained around the site.

The new building will contain state of the art teaching and research laboratory space, classrooms, offices and support spaces for the Chemistry Department faculty, students and visitors.  All new mechanical, electrical, plumbing, data and other support systems will be provided in the anticipated LEED Silver building.

Building Tour of Phillip Markwood Architects' Columbus State Community College Academic Center "E" Project - June 4, 2010

Columbus State Community College has developed a new LEED Silver academic building to become the core of a new branch campus in rapidly growing Delware County, CSCC is embracing environmental stewardship holistically with a sustainable building, site, campus and academic courses offered to students.

The design brings together all of the functions of a basic college campus in an open Learning Center environment. The South facade of the learning commons is visually connected to the native landscape with a curtain wall system which includes sunshades, insulated aluminum panels, translucent panels, and various tints of high performance glazing to control sunlight. Interior glazing is used extensively to draw daylight and views into the core of the building. The learning commons is unified under a sloping metal roof with long overhangs for daylight control. Extensive research on building orientation, building envelope, mechanical options and electrical systems were integrated into the project design. Recycled, regional and low-emitting materials define the building spaces. Raised flooring in the learning commons provides additional adaptability, flexibility and control of technology, electrical and mechanical systems.

This tour was organized by the Emerging Professionals Committee and was lead by Steve Shinn, AIA.

ABOUT MOUNT CARMEL

Mount Carmel St. Ann's is a local hospital located in Westerville.  Just as the area has grown, so has the hospital in order to meet the community's healthcare needs.  The expansion allows the hospital to become a more comprehensive healthcare provider serving Westerville and beyond.

The hospital campus is being expanded to include:

  •  Open-Heart Surgery
  •  New Main Entrance
  •  New Patient Tower (Cardiovascular, Orthopedics, Spine)
  •  Renovated Kitchen & Dining
  •  Parking Garage, New Surface Lot & Road Enhancements

The expansion is setting the standard for care and operations for the hospital.  It incorporates hospitality not only in its architecture but in its services as well.  The main entrance will incorporate retail such as a coffee shop and room service will be provided for the patient rooms.

The overall design is patient and family focused.  Any stay in a hospital can be stressful and the architecture is set up to provide needed respite for those people.  It also provides opportunities for connection and reflection as faith-based themes are weaved into the design.  Patient Rooms have been designed to minimize staff intrusions while maximizing the family space.

The design of the expansion is contextual as well.  Westerville themes are incorporated throughout from the hanging flower baskets to repurposing stain glass windows from the former St. Paul's church.

The presentation will be an overview on the planning and implementation for the new campus. Participants will have the opportunity to tour the first phase of the project just finishing up construction and ready for occupancy - the emergency department. The thoughtfully designed campus includes a women's health center, offering digital mammography and bone density testing in a quiet, comfortable environment just for women. Diagnostic imaging and lab services will be available for both emergency and outpatient needs. That includes MRI, CT scanning, and x-ray. Programming also includes a cafe and two community conference rooms for classes, meetings, events, and more. A medical office building will be added in the spring and will be home to primary care and specialty physician offices, along with outpatient services like physical therapy and cardiac rehabilitation.

Leveque Tower Tour

Sunday, September 21, 2014
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

50 West Broad Street
Columbus, OH 43215

Once the fifth tallest building in the world, the LeVeque Tower stands at the heart of downtown Columbus. The building served as an aerial lighthouse for pilots, as an annex for the biggest hotel in America, as an observation tower, and as corporate headquarters for the American Insurance Union, which commissioned construction of the Citadel, which opened in 1927. After many years, multiple renovations, a few owners, and name changes, the LeVeque Tower is showing its age.

The goal of SCA’s work is to revitalize this iconic building and enhance curb appeal — thereby repositioning the LeVeque in today’s marketplace. SCA first created a master plan for this project, which will include a wholesale revitalization of the building and streetscape as well as the creation of new public spaces and an enhanced lobby space. The LeVeque’s exterior renovation is in progress and the interior renovation has begun with a focus on the lower levels in order to reclaim the corner of Broad and Front with bright, new, and inviting entrances.

Eventually, in addition to revitalized office space, the LeVeque Tower will include luxury apartments and a boutique hotel. The design of the apartments is currently under way.
