This series, Mastering the Business of Architecture, will provide in-depth exposure to topics important to practitioners. This series is geared toward emerging and emerged leaders and intended to fill an important gap in the practical, distilled and advanced knowledge available to small and mid-sized practitioners. 

Historic Building Processes


Understand how to utilize historic preservation to benefit your client and expand your architectural design repertoire. This 2-hour interactive lecture led by Sarah Marsom will delve into local and federal historic districts, and state and federal historic tax credits. Utilizing examples of projects in Columbus, Marsom will take you step-by-step through the local design review process and help you understand best methods to expedite local design review. Learn the basics of the historic tax credit application and how your client can earn up to 45% of project costs through historic tax credits. Reflecting on historic tax credit projects in Ohio, we will discuss the National Park Service’s Secretary of the Interior’s Standards are and how to retain your architectural vision, while respecting the standards and the historic architectural elements. You’ll walk away from this lecture with a greater understanding of local, state, and federal perspectives on historic preservation.

Presented by Sarah Marsom

Sarah Marsom is a historic preservation consultant living in Columbus, Ohio. She is the Chair of the Young Ohio Preservationists, a Heritage Ohio board member and Co-Leader of the Rust Belt Coalition of Young Preservationists. Marsom holds a M.S. in Historic Preservation from Eastern Michigan University and a B.S. in Parks and Recreation Management from Northern Arizona University. She is a primary contributor to the upcoming third edition of Historic Preservation: An Introduction to Its History, Principles, and Practice. In 2016, she founded the Tiny Jane Project, which inspires people to learn about the history of preservation and planning through hand sewn Jane Jacobs dolls; the Tiny Jane Project is an international success and has developed a scholarship program for emerging professionals.

BX Ohio Construction Conference: February 23rd at COSI

LEED Green Associate Exam Prep: April 23, 2010

AIA Columbus will be hosting a full-day LEED Green Associate Exam Prep course on Friday, April 23, 2010 from 9am until 5pm at the Center for Architecture. The course will be taught by Green Education Services.

The U.S. Green Building Council has made a number of recent changes to the LEED examination required for accreditation. Green Associate is the Tier 1 achievement within the USGBC's new LEED 2009 three-tiered accreditation sytem, and signifies a strong knowledge base of the principles of LEED Sustainable Design without the technical knowledge requirements of LEED AP+. 

Why should you attend this seminar?

  1. Unless you have past experience on a LEED project OR are employed in a sustainable field of work, it is a mandatory requirement that you attend a Green Associate Seminar before USGBC will issue you a LEED test date.
  2. All AIA members who attend the seminar will receive 8 Learning Units, 4 of which fulfill the Sustainable Design requirement.

SMPS Marketing Awards: March 10, 2010

The Society for Marketing Professional Services Columbus Chapter is hosting its marketing awards presentation gala to honor excellence in marketing communications in the architecture, engineering and construction (A/E/C) industry on Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at the Center for Architecture on 380 East Broad Street from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Admission is Free.

Firms entered in six different categories including proposals/qualifications statements, self promotion/direct mail, advertising, Web site or online presence, brochures, and/or brand identity.  

Five jurors have been selected for their expertise in marketing and communications in the A/E/C industry and include: Bernard Costantino, University Architect, from The Ohio State University; Craig Weise, State Architect with the State Architect’s Office; Scott Varner, ODOT Director of Communications; Denny Griffith the President of Columbus College of Art and Design; and Brenda Stier, the Founder and President of Marketing Works.
