The head juror of our 2014 AIA Columbus Architecture Awards, Michael Wilkinson, will be presenting at The Center for Architecture and Design on Friday, November 14, 2014 from noon to 1:00 p.m.!

Wilkinson will present recent work which focuses on the intersection between design and environmentally responsible systems for on-site energy production;  harnessing power from the sun, wind, and earth to reduce the energy footprint of projects on urban sites in Chicago.  With an interest in construction this sometimes involves jumping in and getting dirty.  It also involves the critique and deconstruction of lines of professional responsibility that seem to get more and more restrictive and insular.

Find out more about Michael Wilkinson below.

Michael Wilkinson is an award-winning architect based in Chicago with a wide range of experience at multiple scales. For thirteen years Wilkinson ran a boutique architectural practice with partner Richard Blender, focusing primarily on high-end residential and small commercial projects, exclusively urban. Upon dissolving the firm in 2010, Wilkinson assumed an associate principal position with the Chicago office of Solomon Cordwell Buenz, concentrating on medium and high density residential and mixed-use markets. Currently Wilkinson has re-established a small practice focusing on housing, urban development, and construction.

Wilkinson's work has appeared in numerous national publications, including Dwell, Metropolitan Home, Metropolis, Crains, The Chicago Tribune, and Architectural Record. He has received numerous AIA design awards for creativity and was responsible for the first LEED Gold rated residential project in the State of Illinois. He currently serves as the chairman of the AIA Chicago Design Awards Committee. Wilkinson has held teaching positions at both the University of Illinois, Chicago and the Illinois Institute of Technology, and has lectured on his work at both schools, in addition to others. Community involvement has included serving as a director on the Roscoe Village Neighborhood Association, where he chaired the Zoning and Land Use Committee for four years. In 2010 he served on the 47th Ward Zoning Transition Committee, leading a group charged with rewriting the zoning policies of the ward and interfacing with the newly elected freshman alderman. Wilkinson is a past President of the Chicago Architecture Club, during which time he spearheaded a design activism effort focused on the re-appropriation of abandoned post-industrial sites in Chicago. The ensuing publication was instrumental in demonstrating the viability of a project currently being realized by the Chicago Parks District and transportation authorities after receiving state and federal funding.
Passionate about the intersection of design, policy, and politics, Wilkinson continues to actively and vocally participate in issues of importance which shape our urban environment. He lives in the Lakeview neighborhood of Chicago with his wife, two teen-aged sons and a dog.
